And I agree with you to a point.

I think Godzilla is more than just what he looks like and what his powers are. After all, if Batman were to look the same and have the same abilities, but his parents were alive and well, he'd cease to be Batman.

I feel the same way about Godzilla and the G'54 origins. Godzilla was created by nuclear tests in the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That is the core of the character. He is a metaphor for the bomb and the accompanying paranoia of the era. Which is why as much as I enjoyed reading Elliot and Rossio's script, it still isn't Godzilla. Arguably it is even less Godzilla than GINO because the nuclear origins were basically non-existent.

I agree with your analysis of the Star Trek theme as compared to this. The score shouldn't be some composer recycling Ifukube's music. But it should (and I'm certain will) use Ifukube's style as a reference point, since it is so entwined with the character. And the classic Godzilla theme really has to be there. I just can't see this being Godzilla without it.

And again, LP and WB realize they're walking on eggshells with the fanbase. They're going to bend over backwards to make this the classic Godzilla. So I suspect we'll be hearing the Ifukube theme.

Sorry to be "Guy who beats dead horse" but my vote definitely goes to Neil Bloomkamp. He showed with District 9 that he was able to incorporate special effects into the story, not the other way around. Likewise I think his semi-realistic storytelling style would be perfect. Remember what Spielberg said about G'54. It was great because you believed it was really happening. I'd like to see that with this film and I think Bloomkamp is the one to do it.

Letterier would be too obvious and the movie would probably be a soulless explosion fest (which I hope WB/LP doesn't want). And Tarantino would just make a 60's style Godzilla movie, bad dubbing, suitmation and all.
