Well, we'll just agree to disagree on the G'54 stuff. I feel LP is going to be hyper-sensitive about keeping fans satisfied that this is the Godzilla. And what better way to do it than to make it literally the original Godzilla? Only this time he's attacking an American city in an American film.
And I disagree that having this film at least reference G'54 sucks any originality out of it. If that were the case, then BB would've sucked the originality out of the Batman story. After all, his parents died in both, right?
You can have an original take and tell an original story but there still needs to be a consistent starting off point. If this is only going to be a giant reptile who shoots a nuclear beam from his mouth than why even call it Godzilla? To sell tickets? Isn't that what went wrong with GINO?
So no, I will not be disappointed if this is not a sequel-of-sorts to G'54. But I do think it makes sense and is more probable than you guys think.
But back to the music...
Again, without the Ifukube music (or at least the theme) why even call this Godzilla? You might as well take his roar away while you're at it.
Whether this is a sequel or a relaunch is irrelevant, I feel. After all, Casino Royale was a relaunch. Do you think the filmmakers even ever considered dropping the Bond theme? Of course not, because it's part of the character. Same with Godzilla.
This isn't about my Godzilla but the Godzilla. And historically the Godzilla has started in G'54 and included Ifukube's music. Otherwise it's just a giant lizard attacking the city, which is exactly what GINO was and what we don't want this movie to be.
