I have to say that I really liked the design from Always 2, and the original model for one of the earlier drafts of the Sony Godzilla.

Those designs pay homage to the G54 design, while giving it a modern update. I also like the idea of putting visible tumors on Godzilla - a result of the nuclear blast. Something that would show him as a creature in pain, rather than another stupid monster that goes destroying cities for almost no reason.

EDIT: I found this image saved on my computer. I believe its from the original Sony design, from around '93 or '94. I could be mistaken though.
