Godzilla's American problem is that the general public over here hasn't seen any of the films past 1975, so when you mention Godzilla, Americans immediately think of the giant monster that was saving little kids and flying on his tail. People associate Godzilla with either the 70s films or Emmerich's 1998 film.
Aside from the hacked up version of The Return of Godzilla, none of the Heisei or Millennium films got theatrical releases stateside, so the general public only has bad memories of the latter Showa era films that were basically comedies, aside from Terror of Mechagodzilla.
