Recently re-watched both of the V mini series. The first is far superior. The second mini series starts well, but stumbles with the Deus Ex Machina ending.(It was nice to see Sarah Douglas...who played one of the Phantom zone baddies in Superman 2...again)

Night of the Hunter

Peter Graves plays a guy who robs a bank, see? He quickly hides the money with his kids and gets arrested. He makes the kids promise to never tell where the money is mere seconds before the cops get him. While on death-row, Peter shares a cell with a character played by Robert Mitchum, an evil preacher who stradles the line between criminal and serial killer (is in prison for a car robbery, the authorities don't know he's a prolific killer). Mitchum knows the kids must know where the money is, so when he gets out he romances Peter's widow by claiming to be the preacher who was there when Peter was hanged.

What follows is a terrifying film told from the point of view of these kids as Mitchum haunts them in a manner more akin to the boogeyman than a real person. It's all done like a small child's nightmare. It isn't technically a horror film, but if you dig old horror than you can't miss it.

Capitalism: A Love Story (2009)

There was a clip from Gamera the Invincible in it, and overall I enjoyed the documentary.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard - I thought this was HILARIOUS...ok, so it's kind of a 'stock' movie with 'stock' characters (Kathryn Hahn basically plays the same character she played in Step Brothers, Jeremy Piven is Jeremy Piven, David Koechner is his 'standard' character, etc) but I laughed...a LOT Craig Robinson is hilarious and has some of my favorite moments in the film...one of the BEST lines (IMHO) was when they ask him to play a song and he plays a TOTALLY different one and then goes "Nobody tells DJ Request what to play" i just thought it was HILARIOUS that his name is DJ Request and yet he takes NO requests whatsoever...
Will Ferrell is also AWESOME in this as he does what Will Ferrell does best: Only appear in a small handful of scenes to just do some wierd stuff (kind of like in Wedding Crashers)...Will Ferrell is hit or miss (at best) when he's a STAR in a film (to the point where i refuse to go to a theater anymore to see a 'starring will ferrell' film), but when he appears only for a few moments, he's almost always GOLD

Drag Me to Hell - liked it, posted more about it in the Scifi thread

ThanXgiving - hated it, posted more (a bit) about it in the scifi thread

I last movies I saw in theatres were The Fourth Kind = an interesting concept that doesn't really succeed. The Box = good, creepy but a little too long and preposterous at times. Antichrist = shocking, disturbing portrait of a couple who's relationship falls apart after the death of their child. Very good but not for everyone.

On DVD: The Teacher = cheesy 70's flick about a high school dude who ends up boning his hot blonde high school teacher while they're both being stalked by a psychopath. Cold Prey = Norwegian slasher film about a group of kids who go snowboarding and end up getting stalked by a killer in an abandoned hotel. Pretty good, relies more on atmosphere and mood than gore. Otto; Or Up With Dead People = really weird but also funny flick about a gay zombie who gets recruited by some avant garde German filmmaker to star in her next film. Black Belt Jones = the blaxploitation classic about a karate pro who goes up against a gang of thugs. Very funny!

Orpheus

The second Jean Cocteau film I've seen. It's fantastic, but I didn't like it quite as much as Beauty and the Beast.

A must see for fans of A-Ha's music video "Take on Me." The video was inspired by this movie, and you'll descover what the bikers are all about.

Spellbound

An amazing Hitchcock film, I loved every minute of it. Had a few plot twists, and was really intriguing.

The Third Man

While film noir aren't amongst my favorite type of films, some of them can be very interesting. Orson Welles, I believe, is an extraordinary actor. I loved this film!

I recently watched yet another Christmas film to get myself in the mood.
Jack Frost, and NOT the sappy Michael Keaton version.
It was OK, not great, I was actually quite disappointed with the special effects - the snowman costume barely even moves...
I've done a full review

Child's Play
you can read the full review

I think I saw this on TV recently, only half-watching it...and I saw the first couple of scenes, and all the snow, and I thought to myself "Man, this is a Christmas movie...how'd I ever miss that?" then i re-watched it for the review and realized...damn, it's really NOT a christmas movie...

but it's also a LOT better than it's sequels lead you to believe...a situation where a few really bad sequels tarnished the reputation of an original that was totally decent

This is an epic Russian history/fantasy film centered on the Russo/Polish war of the early 1600s, at the time of transition between the reign of the Godunovs to the Rominovs. As someone not involved with the politics of the film (it sounds like all of the political allegory was pretty controversial) I enjoyed it quite a bit. Lots of crazy battles and beautiful cinematography.
