Jelly, it sounds like you didn't quite grasp that the movie is supposed to be funny... just about all your complaints about it stem from the comedic scenes. Your complaining that these moments are ridiculous, but that's what they're supposed to be. Whale said "Bride of Frankenstein" is a movie meant to be funny and it IS a funny movie... no, its not a comedy, but its a VERY funny movie. There's a scene in Gods and Monsters where James Whale's gardener tells him he watched Bride with a bunch of friends the night before. James asks him "did they laugh at it?" The gardner lies and says "No." and Whale says "That's such a shame."

The mini humans, Shelley's indecisiveness in the prologue, Minnie, the over the top Pretorious... its all comedy and its all hilarious. I'd suggest listening to the commentary on the DVD, its fantastic. And the serious moments in the film are also pitch perfect... and even MORE heartbreaking than the ones in the original film! The death of the monsters, the situation with the blind man, and the reaction of the Bride when she sees the monster REALLY tug at the heart strings. This movie is perfect. I prefer it to the original even. Its got everything. Horror! Romance! Comedy! Drama! *mocking old trailers*

i just don't think it WORKED. at all.

it reminded me of (dare i say it? dare i? i think i do) Transformers. for the 1930s, it had a lot of pretty stuff to look at (whether it be the inescapably hott actress who plays elizabeth, the amazing creature effects or the spectacular set-pieces), but the plot was just RIDICULOUS and the humor was so CRASS and didn't work and it just felt BENEATH everyone involved and made me feel embarrassed for the couple of people in the cast that actually put in good performances (Karloff, Clive [and Duhamel, Cullen in Transformers]).

you can make all the arguments in the world about how Transformers (or Bride) are not SUPPOSED to be taken seriously, but that doesn't mean they're GOOD or that the comedic elements WORK...

the difference between the two movies seems to be that while one (Bride) seems to be exemplary of an EXCEPTION to the general rules that Whale directs good movies and the early Universal films are gold; the other (Transformers) is the exemplary work of it's director (Michael Bay).

and perhaps the Transformers analogy touches too much of a nerve (hell, it pained me to even do it), but then perhaps a better example is Bride to Gremlins 2...a parady of the very movie it's sequelling (oh yeah, i LOVE to invent words) that just doesnt work as well as it's source film...or how about An American Werewolf in Paris?

in the end, it is an entertaining, but entirely uneven movie that SUFFERS due to it's comedic elements. rather than bring the movie to a new level of black comedy (which more scenes in the "having a picnic on top of a girl's coffin" vein would have done marvelously), it just gets driven into a realm of silliness that is perhaps equal to Robo-Balls, Female Gremlins, or the wise-cracking Freddy Krueger of the later Nightmare on Elm Street films...

i know, it's all blasphemy, i'm NEARLY ashamed to even think it, but i honestly cannot defend this movie as GOOD cinema...to me, it's one of the first-ever "popcorn" flicks...lots to look at but little to no real substance

(although, i will add that perhaps my having seen the movie "Young Frankenstein" ruined it, i mean, i IMMEDIATELY drew a comparison [unintentionally] between Minnie and Frau Blucher...)

Lol I agree with you slightly Jelly but that doesn't mean I'm going to protect you now that you've compared The Bride of Frankenstein to Transformers...surely the angry villagers will now come for you with their pitchforks and torches.

I agree that the humour seems pretentious and the fact that so few people actually get it, means to me, that Whale's missed the mark here. I love Gods and Monsters but in that film Whale's seems to be a sort of snob if you will who takes much pride in high class society. So while I love his work I think the humour in the movie fails epicly and only serves now for some to claim that they are in the "know" and that they alone see something in this film that no one else does. (Perhaps their minds are tuned that way and they actually do see the humorous elements of the film but for most of us that's just not the case)

Mouth I have the utmost respect for you and am not claiming that you are one of these people...if you think a movie has comedic qualities then it's because you actually think that it does, not because someone else has said it.

I just think Bride's balance of humor and horror is so well done. I didn't find the humor crass at all. Whale snuck A LOT of it (especially the homosexual innuendo) past the censors, so it had to be pretty subtle. The only instances I can think of of the humor going over the top is the mini people and the character of Minnie. I really do think its Universal's best horror movie (at least tied with the first Frankenstein), and one of the best horror films ever made. I can't think of a single thing in it that I don't think works beautifully.

The Invisible Man might be the Whale film where you might find the balance of comedy and horror to be more to your liking? But at the same time, I'm almost afraid you'll tear that movie to pieces if you didn't like the humor in Bride. You probably just don't enjoy his sense of humor like so many others do. I find it very unique and very funny, and many other people do as well.

And jelly, I LOVE Gremlins 2!!

Over the past week I've watched

Jaws series which is decent but Jaws the Revenge is absolutely terrible, I know a lot of people lump Jaws 3/3D in there but I don't mind it if you can get past the cheesy 3D effects which for some reason stick out like a sore thumb. I don't know why they just didn't do a version that wasn't 3D and one that was. Universal could at least give us a proper release of Jaws 3D.

Bram Stoker's Dracula yes I know the love story ruins the film but its actually pretty decent save for Keenu's acting but Oldman does an amazing job as Dracula and the score is top notch.

Frost/Nixon this was actually pretty decent to watch my friend recommended it to me and I really enjoyed it.
