A user on AVSforum has posted screen captures from Toho's new Godzilla disc, matched to the same frames from DVDBeaver's comparison of the US/UK discs:
These pretty much look like I remember the Rialto print looking on the big screen, except with all the scratches erased. I doubt this film is ever going to look razor sharp; a lot of it seems to have been shot with the lenses at their widest apertures, with a very shallow depth of field (i.e. a small area in focus), which is also where lenses tend to be their softest.
Some of the shots from the Classic Media disc look a bit more detailed at first, but that seems to be because the Classic Media disc is framed so tightly, in effect magnifying the frames. The Toho shots aren't so tightly framed, with a lot more detail in the shadows, and no pesky de-interlacing artifacts.
Now, if only I actually had a Blu-Ray player...
