Making a Godzilla Suit

Postby dIsCoMbObuLaTor » Tue Sep 01, 2009 11:12 pm

Hey all!

First just wanna say hey as its been a while since I have posted on the boards, but I'm back now. =)

Anyway I have decided to undertake the task of designing and building a Godzilla suit/costume for an upcoming school project that I have. The project is a short film that kind of explores my childhood dreams and since Godzilla was always a big part of my childhood I'm planning on having a scene with him in it.

I was just wondering if anyone here has attempted this before and if you have any advise on materials or just general do's and dont's.

I'll be sure to update my progress as I go along. =)

I've made several Godzilla suits in the past. When I make one I reinforce the crap out of it by covering the foam parts with fabric like old bed sheets once you get the foam sculpted the way you want. Then use a really strong adhesive like flooring adhesive to glue on the skin detailing then cover all of that with a thin layer of latex rubber. The head feet and hands I sculpted from modeling clay then took plaster casts of to use as molds, then pouring in layers of latex rubber until the desired thickness is built up. I usually use heavy upholstry thread and needles when I work also. There are pictures of my Godzilla suit and also pictures of the castings of the lates head and feet on the yahoo monster costume makes site. That may be a good idea to join so you can look at the photo albums of different Godzilla suits and other monster suits in progress for pointers.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, I'm going to begin to gather materials for the suit this weekend.

I'll deff head over to that yahoo group too, it sounds like it would be really helpful.
