Michael Bay I would say most definitely not. Yes I'm sure we'd get the real Godzilla laying waste to cities and doing battle with a bevy of other creatures. But it would also be mindless with a sense of humor that jumps back and forth between overtly inappropriate to downright meanspirited.
Yes, he can make money, but let's aim higher than Michael Bay. At least until we get completely desperate.
While Tarantino is a fine director, I'm sure a Godzilla movie directed by him would be completely esoteric and ultimately one giant reference to previous giant monster movies. Kinda' like Kill Bill was to martial arts flicks.
The two directors who jump to my mind are Guillermo Del Toro and Sam Raimi but both of those guys have projects lined up til 2055 so I doubt they'll do it.
What about Alfonso Cuaron? He can obviously handle the delicate balance between dark and popular as evidenced by Harry Potter 3 and to a lesser extent Children of Men...just a thought.
