To me, there is a place for both. I just wanna see/experience the destruction caused by Godzilla in the most visceral way possible. I'm ready to give it a chance and in the end, relish it all and not feel like I'm betraying the old school! F Gino and stigma be damned! Woo HOO!!

I just watched a double feature of War of the Gargantuas and All Monsters Attack today, and after doing so, I realized why I loved the Showa Era and why I have been growing increasingly disinterested in the rest of genre. There is a level of craftsmanship that can't be replicated in the Golden Age of Japanese cinema. Whether it be the blaring soundtrack, the detailed miniatures, or stock actors that these films contain. Ever since then, the Godzilla series has just been a shadow of it's former self, trying desperately to gain it's former glory. Heisei and Millennium alike (Credit goes to Millennium for never being lifeless, though).

Godzilla has always been a childhood favorite of mine, but when I watch these films now, it's clear that he is just one element in what made these films work. So, I'm going to flat out say that I really don't care about this project anymore. Godzilla, by himself, is a flat one-note property. Re-capturing the essence of the 50's-60's films is pointless as well. The only way a new Godzilla project will work is if they completely re-do the character completely, and get a good team behind it.

Hey look...don't twist this into another one of those cgi vs. traditional effects arguments...I'm really a middle of the road type of guy here..since it hasn't really been attempted with a decent budget and by a team of people who want to honor the original movies and the way they were made I think it's foolish to say it can't be done in a way that appeases all but the more conservative of fans and brings in new ones from the general public at the same time...

Since I AM a fan..my loyalties lie with the traditional methods because they are what made me a fan in the first place...you wouldn't take the muppets out of a Henson production but this is a little different because at first Honda and co were in fact striving for realism and had to settle for the suits and minatures method...their ultimate dreams have yet to be realized..

Now I know..some will say...striving for realism!? Ha! But read over the interviews conducted with Honda (Tsuburya is a little bit of a different story) and you will see that he made the best of what he had...were he still alive today a young Honda or Tsuburya would undoubtedly utilize special digital effects because they were masters of their craft and like Stan Winston...they would want to use every available tool in their film making arsenal...hence the shift to color film making so quickly relative to their western counterparts and the usage of special film printers well before most in the west as well...

No, I'm not one of the old guard that insists that Godzilla must be done in suits..I like suitmation very much but am willing to at least view an effort from anyone on a new method

I probably should have been more clear, but I was actually writing in favor of using new techniques and ideas. Like I said, it's pointless to try to recapture the essence of the original series (Which Toho has been doing for thirty years), so why not try something else? Bringing back old monsters isn't the answer.
