I think because of the way the film industry has become (you can just download movies off the net) and how much tickets are that is one fo the major contributors. Especially in Japan where movie tickets are 20 bucks a piece. Major deal is that the spfx have a hard time competeing with American films now, but that's a minor thing compared to how the Japanese view their films. The Godzilla anime is one major way to realvitalize the series. You could do so much more with an anime and have amazing visuals and not worry about a plethora of issues. Thus, you'd also be able to tap into the rich anime market as well.
