Movies You've Seen in Theaters

Postby TitanoGoji16 » Mon Apr 20, 2009 8:27 pm

The upcoming festival, Godzilla and the Monsters of Mass Destruction, inspired this: Which giant monster movies, Toho or otherwise, have you been able to catch in theaters?

The ones I've seen:

- Gojira
- Mothra
- Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
- Godzilla (1998)
- Mothra 3: King Ghidorah Attacks
- Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris
- Godzilla 2000 (Six times! The most I've ever seen any movie in the theater)
- King Kong (2005)
- Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
- Godzilla: Final Wars
- Transformers (Would this count? They're giant robots...)
- Cloverfield
- Monsters vs. Aliens

Fun idea for a thread! In the past ten years or so I've been lucky enough to catch a lot of films on the big screen, thanks to the Egyptian Theatre, Godzillafest, the American Film Market, and events like the Japan Film Festival currently running in Los Angeles. The Egyptian alone has screened nearly every Toho kaiju/toku film that there is a subbed or dubbed print available for.

This isn't exactly what TitanoGoji16 asked for, but here are the Asian monster/sci-fi/horror/FX films (and a comedy or two) that I've seen in theaters. I've never paid to see a DVD-R or a commercially released DVD projected on a big screen and wouldn't count it if I did, so for everything listed here I saw either a film print or a video/digital version provided directly by the studio or distributor...

Well here is my list for you all.

1998: GINO

2000: Godzilla vs Destoroyah and Godzilla 2000 (both of them were English dubbed versions)

2004: Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (in its original Japanese language)

2005: King Kong (the remake version) and Steamboy (US version).

2006: Sinking of Japan (the remake version)

2008: War of the Gargantuas (the english version of the film).

Also I want to add that I am stunned, impressed, and a bit jealous of the film list that both kpa and August have provided here. I just had to say that alright(shrugs).

Andrew,
Don't be jealous; I'm just older, and saw some of the '70s films when they first were released, and there used to be theaters that would show a lot of the older films. There were also summer kids matinees at different theaters all over the San Francisco Bay Area which would book these films, and also the UC Berkeley Theater used to have a one day "Godzillathon", featuring four movies in a row. Usually, they were the same four (GODZILLA VS. THE THING, GHIDRAH, DAM and SMOG MONSTER), but we looked forward to it every spring.

Many others, I got to see in Japan, either in retrospective screenings, or at the Tokyo International Film Festival. We also had a Japanese theater here in San Francisco (which closed in the late 1980s), and I saw a bunch of cool films there as well (like Toei's amazing WATARI THE NINJA BOY).

Back then, there were also more prints floating around... or still owned by the original US distributors, so they were easier to see. Now, prints are scare, and there's not a lot available from the Showa Era in terms of rental prints that theaters can book.

Kids of my generation were just lucky to grow up in that time to be able to see all of these films. But, we didn't have DVDs or even VCRs back then, either... we would have killed to have them.

Wow.... just wow at KPA and August. Unfortunately, my list isn't that long but here it goes:

Godzilla 1985
Godzilla (1998)
Godzilla 2000
GMK (my very first theatrical booking)

Gfest 2004:
Godzilla vs Monster Zero
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Godzilla: Tokyo SOS

Gfest 2005:
Godzilla vs Hedorah
Godzilla: Final Wars

Gfest 2008:
Godzilla vs Gigan
The first half of Godzilla vs Biollante
Godzilla X Mechagodzilla

I skipped over the non Toho G flix at the conventions and missed DAM at Gfest last year.

King Kong (2005)
Cloverfield

I believe that has it covered.
