FYI - if you can view PAL/Region 4 DVDs, you'd be far better off buying the Australian Madman releases. They're essentially the Toho R2s with English subtitles, plus special features, optional English dubbing and Toho's 5.1 tracks...

not sure, but as mentioned above, try doing some internet searches for software/firmware updates that will allow your PC to play different region discs...

The PAL/NTSC thing doesn't apply to PCs.

Chances are your disc drive is region locked and you will only be allowed to change it a couple of times before it locks for good.

One very good piece of software I've been using for years (since around 2002) is DVD Region + CSS Free. You do have to pay for it, but it's a lifetime purchase with unlimited free updates. This runs quietly in the background and unlocks the region code on both your disc drive and the player software. I'd highly recommend it:

If you're on an Apple computer you can rip and de-encode DVDs with a free program named MacTheRipper. I haven't had a chance to test it on an R2 yet though.

Alternatively, VLC can often read R2 (or otherwise) discs as data files, ignoring the encoding entirely. Doesn't help you with subs, however.

there's also a free program for PCs called dvd43 that i use to watch other region dvds. It runs in the background like the one James mentioned, but it's free. Unfortunately it doesn't work for every movie, but it works for the vast majority of them. (the R3 GMK disc is the only one in my collection that hasn't worked. all the madman R4 discs i've tried work fine though)

also, there are plenty of sites that have region code hacks for dvd players. here's one i've used before, just search for your player: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks?dvdpl ... ll+by+Name
you can also do a google search & find tons of info.

Generally, the cheaper dvd players are easier to hack & will play more discs, at least from what i've read. I have a cyberhome model that was about $40 & after i hacked it once & set it to Region 0, it now plays every disc i've ever put in it. PAL, NTSC, DVD-r, and every region code i've ever tried & it plays them all flawlessly.
