the drove Ghidrah off the Earth. earlier, it had been shown they drove Ghidrah off Planet X (albeit a fixedoutcome) so the symbology is already there. they were also the hero monsters, whereas Godzilla was the villain against Kong.

see? simple!

But in the English dub (which is the only version I've seen TBH), the human characters wonder whether or not Ghidorah killed Godzilla & Rodan.

The defeat of the people of Plaent X was really the finale, the monster fight was just an added bonus. The way I see it the monsters were all confused and angry and after fighting for a minute they all ran off on their seperate ways wondering just what happened.

Rodan chilled out in Big G's place for a few beers after taking down that three-headed freak - that's why they didn't come out of the water. :P

I like to think that Godzilla lost, which made him even more pissed off when they fought again in Destroy All Monsters. :)

You know, I love how fans re-interpret scenes to fit their own rosey views. KG emerges from the sea. Very sad, solemn follows with the characters looking concerned and expressing confusion, "Did he kill Godzilla and Rodan???".

Now, I am sorry, but how in the hell does this get translated by fandom as "Godzilla and Rodan won!" or "they won and drove him from the earth" or "King Ghidorah was running away!"??? :?:  I thought it was very obvious that it was a win by KG. At the very best, it was a stalemate/tie...but a "clear, triumphant win for G and Rodan"????! Um...sorry, that's really stretching it. Someone explain this to me.... the ending itself was no more or less clearcut than in KKvsG...in fact, the endings of these 2 films are basically identical; yet in that film, almost everyone universally accepts that Kong won...go figure.

Personally, I thought it was a very clever ending by Honda and the film crew to shock the audience (I remember as a kid I was shocked, as Godzilla always wins when he's not the "villian" of the film). Definitely not your typical ending to a G film. Once in a while even the King of the Monsters loses(ala against King Kong and Mothra), and this was one of those rare instances (which also further cemented KG as his "worst enemy/most powerful foe" status of the series)...

speaking from the "old timers" view point here, not a one of my friends that saw the movie "back in the day" thought Ghidrah won. we knew who the bad guy was and why he was leaving Earth with his tails tucked between his legs. he lost, that's why!

as far as the similarities between this and KKVSG, sure, they do look alike. but that's all. the tones of both movies aren't even close. again, no one i saw this movie ever wondered who "won". had you asked any of the kids in the theater (and it was packed every time it was shown) they would all say "Kong won. he was the hero, of course he won."

there was none of this second guessing of either movie back then. Monster Zero ends exactly the same way GHIDRAH did, with Ghidrah flying off into space.

It's a decisive victory; King Ghidorah is driven off of the planet with his tails between his legs by Godzilla and Rodan's kamikaze attack. Even if they died, which they didn't, they still won -- death does not mean forfeit (just ask Russell Casse).
