One of the major topics we're going to be seeing in film the next couple of years is the whole "the end of the world" bit. I could see Toho possibly thinking about bringing the Big Guy back for an apocalyptic-style film even though we sort of got that with GFW. I doubt it'll actually happen.
Over the last few years I have pondered as to when would be the appropriate time and I do believe a few more years is what's needed. Hell, I think Toho could even do it now if they got some good writers in there to create something that hasn't been done, or has been rarely seen, throughout the franchise.
Personally, I think it will take a really dark Godzilla film for people to even be remotely interested in the series again. As I said in another thread, forget about making them family/kid friendly; make them appealing to those who are in their twenties and thirties. Do a trilogy that is a DAM sort of thing with various kaiju and have be one big story like LOTR in three different movies. The franchise hasn't even come close to remotely seeing a dark Godzilla film since Godzilla 1985.
I believe if you get the right people in there you could make a really good dark Godzilla movie. Hell, we may need to make a film/trilogy that is darker than the first one. Something to show that Godzilla isn't some kiddie-fare which, unfortunately, is still the mass mindset of folks in the States.
My opinion: An extremely dark Godzilla movie in the next 5-10 years. REALLY dark!
