That you would think that skin color is an integral, immutable part of a character from, as you say, escapist fiction, is what I find disturbing. The only reason you give ("...never has he been black. So why now?..."), in the context of Doctor Who, is IMO nonsensical. At various points through the series, the Doctor had never been blond, had never had a Scottish accent, had never been young, had never been over 6' tall, and on and on. I simply don't understand how one could look at the 10 different portrayals of the character so far, and determine that the most important point of consistency is that they were white.

It just seems to me that the only important casting rule should be that he (or she, haha!) be a great actor. Unless you have some secret knowledge that Moffat would be casting the role thinking "Hmm, time we had a black Doctor.. which black actor should we cast in the role?", then your "PC has run amuck" argument also holds no water.

You're welcome to your opinion, of course. But, as you said, it's not the 60s. It's the 21st century, and not everyone sees the world as you seem to.

"In an article appearing in The Sun, incoming showrunner Steven Moffat hints that the casting of the next Doctor could go to an older actor.

Moffat is quoted as saying: "Although I loved Peter Davison and Paul McGann, probably the best two actors in the role, I don’t think young, dashing Doctors are right at all.

"He should be 40-plus and weird-looking — the kind of wacky grandfather kids know on sight to be secretly one of them."

The article also speculates that the next lead actor will be well-known, quoting an interview Moffat did with Doctor Who Magazine back in 1999: "Any actor with the ‘right stuff’ is unlikely to be a complete unknown."

David Tennant continues in the role of the Doctor through the 2009 television specials and a new Doctor will be introduced when Moffat takes the reins in 2010."

And his name is Matt Smith, and he is both pretty and weird looking at the same time!

Well, it'll be interesting to see what they do with him.

I think they need to get away from pretty boys and back to the old cranky weird and or goofy looking guys.

^ Shonokin I agree 100%. He's not too different in many ways from the last two Docs. It's ironic my "well received" fears of racial stunt casting might be far more imaginary than "ageism" casting!(meant as a joke for christ-sake). Just watched Brain of Morbius last night and we need an older zany guy. Still excited to see what moffet does, hopefully there will be less awful camp scripts(good riddance RTD), and will miss Tennant. First reaction to junior is he looks too much like Crispin Glover! But time will tell.

Make that if Michael York and Crispin Glover had a love child!

He does sort of remind me of a young Christopher Eccleston, especially in this photo:

Was this Moffat's pick? I know he wanted someone older. He should
have had some say so IF you ask me. Pretty soon were going to
have a 6 year old driving the Tardis. I can see the toy: The Playskol
Tardis Action Set.

I have the Blackadder docu "taped" but haven't had a chance to sit down with the wife and watch it. We had a Blackadder marathon here in the States on BBC America, and then we had the DW and "Gavin & Stacey" xmas specials to catch up on. The wife's new Wii has been a powerful distraction! Didn't even know about the Blackadder special until a few days ago, but looking forward to it.

Re: Smith -- I genuinely can't tell. Sometimes I see "it" when he's talking in Confidential, other times... not so much. But I'll totally withhold judgment. When I first saw "Second Coming", I loved it, but just couldn't see Eccleston's gurning being at all a good sign for the soon-to-return DW. Shows what I know. Plus, we wrung a lot of hands when Tristan Farnon signed up to play the Doctor in '81, and that turned out just fine despite Tom Baker being such a hard act to follow.

But I do love that it was totally unexpected, as it should be.
