Well, I don't know, I thought it was a good movie. I would give it a 3/5 or a 7/10.

I wish I could actually see this movie. I'm falling on my face waiting for SBS to finally broadcast Godzilla vs. Mothra, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla and Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla - subtitled that is.

However, I've heard bits and pieces of Takayuki Hattori's score to this film, and some parts are great while others are blah.

I agree...this film is flawed beyond belief. However, there is one scene that I absolutely love:

During the battle on Birth Island, SpaceGodzilla's flying through the air, blasting Godzilla and LittleGodzilla with his corona beam. At one point, Godzilla shields LittleGodzilla from the attack with his own body. At this point, the music hits a certain point and....I don't know. Every time I see that, I get chills. I just...found it to be kind of heartwarming, when Godzilla protects his offspring, even to his own injury. This movie, as well as Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1993), effectively made me feel sympathy for Godzilla, while at the same time, he was still very much a destructive monster, and not a superhero "defender of the world" like he was in the 1970s.

However, besides that scene, there's not much for me to like in this film. The nude scene, the ridiculous and overly terse mafia subplot, the horrible acting, the horrible dialogue, the insipid idea that a guy could kill Godzilla with a rifle, the subpar special effects, the mediocre score, the overly long battle....I could go on and on.

I just watched this one for the first time last week, along with GvsD (I picked up the Tri-Star double DVD). While I wasn't particularly impressed with either film, I actually had a bit more fun with SpaceGodzilla than Destroyer.

I'm not sure why...maybe it was the island setting, which reminded me of the South Seas films of the Showa era, or the sense of humor, or the toyetic MOGUERA, or the horribly cheesy space fight...all of these things just cracked me up. The Heisei series needed a "so bad it's good" entry, and this is definitely it.

SpaceGodzilla himself has an interesting design, and really...how can you not love a robotic flying penguin of doom?
