I received my advance copy yesterday, and I will say this is another winner from the team at JN Productions! The Ban Daisuke interview is different than JNP's interview segments for their previous DVD releases and the Fan Interview is similar in structure and execution to the "Generation Kikaida Special" from 2002 -- the fans are going to eat this one up! :)

Is it going to be available anywhere else besides their site? $100 is a bit pricy for me.

Well, because of restrictions by Toei Company, no. Although that doesn't mean that your local retailer cannot try to carry them directly from Generation Kikaida. But, if you save $20 for five weeks, you can pick this release up.

Unfortunately, licensing the rights to these shows aren't cheap--after Toei's deals with Saban and Village Roadshow in licensing POWER RANGERS over the last 14 years, they aren't going to lowball their other titles, even for a small label like JN Productions (with whom they've worked closely with over the last six years). Plus, the amount of work that JN Productions put into these (digitally cleaning up the masters Toei sends them, the sharp menu design and abundance of extras), blow away similar domestic releases--and don't forget that JN Productions' box sets are still half the price of the R2 DVD releases from Toei Video (which contain little or no extras and lack English subtitles).

Thanks for the information, August. I went ahead and pre-ordered the set. Get a free shirt, so.. WOOT!

btw, they say that orders over $100 require a signature upon delivery. Do they mean "items + shipping" or just item? The DVD set is $99.95, just under $100.. so that's why I'm asking. Thanks.

edit:

Was looking at their other DVDs. Is kikaida, Kikaida 01 and Kamen Rider V3 worth checking out at some point? I was always more of a Daikaiju fan more then Japanese super heroes... but kind of came to respect them etc.

KIKAIDA is still popular (and was a big hit in Hawaii, even making the pages of Time magazine in 1974), has a unique story and is still one of the most beloved series in tokusatsu history--look here for more information:

Here are my thoughts on the series:

Kung Fu Cinema review of KIKAIDA Vol. 1:

KIKAIDA 01 is a good follow-up, but was never as popular as its predecessor--but it's still a solid series:

As for KAMEN RIDER V3, I consider it the best of the Showa Kamen Rider series and the best superhero series of the 1970s--so, that's a pretty solid recommendation.

My DVD player always remembers where I was at during a movie or TV show, but the subs turn off and I have to turn 'em back on - every time. Strange. My player's kinda old, so maybe other/newer models don't do this? Hmmm...

As for the cursing, there is also a "sonuvabtich"in there, and THAT really surprised me. Still, I'd LOVE to share this series with kids (and JNP must realize this since their locally-promoted live stage & fan stuff are heavily attended by folks bringing their young children, to initiate them into the "Kikaida Generation.") However, I don't know any mom who would be okay with their little kids imitating the DVD subs and calling each other bastards and SOBs, do you? I know the seat of my pants would be red-hot for a month if I used that sort of adult language if I were 6-12 and still living under Mom & Dad's roof. Go back to offering earlier releases which had the ability to click an Expletives Deleted option. That would be a great compromise, although I'm guessing it would cost more for JNP to include it in the options menu.

Thanks for clearing up the who/what is Inazuman. I was only unsure because he uses lightning in most of his moves, and so I thought perhaps he was supposed to be a lightning bug, but they don't spin cocoons (or do they? I'm not into entomology, so I don't know for sure).

If FLASH makes it out eventually, please also consider doing some investigative piece on the fabrication of the Raijingo car. I really LOVE trick movie/TV cars like the old Batmobile and Green hornet's Black Beauty, etc., etc., so it would be a treat to see any behind-the-scenes stuff on turning whatever base car they started with into the Raijingo vehicle - if such pictures and so forth even exist. (I wanted the same info on the real scoot that was the Sidemachine, but it got either ignored or lost in the shuffle.)

I sure hope JNP completes Inazuman with 'Flash' as the end of this first series sets up the machinery behind the sequel and leaves you hanging, waiting for next's weeks exciting introductory episode!

Great stuff!!!!!!!!
Peace.
