I've probably watched both discs 3-4 times each since I got the set. Overall, I think Classic Media did a great job with both movies. Just the fact that both versions of Rodan and War of the Gargantuas are included is enough to satisfy me. There are a few flaws, mind you (the Japanese version of WOTG is a little bit dark, the U.S. version of Rodan isn't as good as CM's previous disc, the subtitles for WOTG are kind of weird, etc.), but I can live with them. Kudos to all that were involved in the production! The documentary is very informative too.

So, was anyone else really underwhelmed with Rodan? I loved the special effects, but the human characters were pretty boring after the first twenty minutes/

I've often considered the Japanese version of Rodan to be severely underscored, and poorly edited. It's still a good movie, but it seems to me that Honda, Tsuburaya and co. were still sharpening their teeth on the genre. Their best films would come later on, starting with Mothra, at which point I feel they had fully mastered the craft. Still, I've always been fond of Rodan for its great looking sets, realistic city-destruction scenes and its poignant climax. But I do sympathize with you, Mac, to some degree. Atleast when considering the Japanese version.

I actually like the Japanese version of Rodan way more than the American version. The Japanese version is much moodier and it doesn't have that WAY over dramatic narration (that also seems to narrate literally everything on the screen). I used to love the narration, but after seeing the original version, you really see how uncalled for it is.

I also think Rodan has some of the better characters from that era of monster movies, so I can't agree. I think Rodan is simply one of the best in just about every aspect.

I completely agree wit you, Mouth. Rodan is in my top 5 of favorite Kaiju flicks, and finally being able to see the Japanese version makes it even better.

I posted a review for the new Rodan/War of the Gargantuas DVD set on my blog (it's after my review of 6teen: The Complete First Season):

Looks like Classic Media has put forth another solid winner!

Amazon's current stock is probably just sold out - give it a few days and it'll surely be back up.
