Here we go again. When will the hacks in Hollywood stop fondling the classics? Now its Hooper/Spielberg's Poltergeist getting destroyed by the Boogeyman guys.

Snowden and White Penning Poltergeist Remake
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
August 19, 2008

Boogeyman scribes Juliet Snowden and Stiles White will write the screenplay for MGM's planned remake of Poltergeist, the 1982 horror film that was directed by Tobe Hooper and produced/co-written by Steven Spielberg.

The MGM/UA release grossed $122 million worldwide and earned Oscar nominations for its ILM-designed visual effects, sound effects and score.

The story of a suburban home built over an Indian burial ground and thus inhabited by a nasty spook earned further cult status when two of the child actors in the movie died after the film's release. Two sequels were produced.

Snowden and White have also had a hand in the remake of The Birds and co-wrote the upcoming Knowing.

Here's hoping they have a truly crappy cast for the Poltergeist remake, in case the supposed "curse" hits. Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Paris Hilton.....

Wow - why does [modern] Hollywood think everything needs to be explained?

I read The Birds novelette, by Daphne du Maurier, years ago on which the Hitchcock movie is based - and we never find out why the birds are attacking. I've never seen the whole of Hitchcock's adaptation but I believe he carried that unknown aspect through.

Maybe, just maybe, this time a studio will get Tarzan right.

Greystoke was a terrible Tarzan movie, it starts off okay but soon sets down a wildly divergent path from ERB's Tarzan book[s]. In some ways, the later Disney animated movie is more faithful than Greystoke - but even it diverges from ERB's book in several significant areas.

The book is fantastic, if you've never read I urge you to go out now and find a copy to read. It's amazing to see how little of the book survived into any of the big screen adaptations.
