GINO turns 10

Postby RyanClark » Thu May 22, 2008 1:43 am

I notied Godzilla (1998) was airing tonight on ABC Family, which made me remember, it's been ten years since it's premiere. It was released May 19, 1998. So, let's all celebrate! (Kidding)

I never thought it was that bad of a movie, it was pretty good for a monster flick, and the score was great. It just wasn't really a "Godzilla" film.

To add more of a point to this thread, let's reminisce about when it was released. I remember the first time I saw GINO's image was in the first issue of G-Fan I ever read, and I saw the figures at KMart a couple days before the movies release. I bought a lot if not all of the merchandise available at Taco Bell. Oddly enough, I didn't get to see the film on the release date, but I did see it the next day with my mom.

Like it or hate it, I think GINO did a lot for Godzilla fans, regardless of the quality of the film. Who of us thought that, before that movie, we'd see the Heisei films in America? (At least as early as we did; I'm sure they'd have been out eventually.) Not to mention companies like Simitar trying to cash in.

So, share your GINO memories.

Anticipation is always a large part of the fun, and in the case with this one, it was pretty much all of it! Did anybody else get chills just hearing Godzilla's roar fill the movie theater and know that he was "coming to town" as the first preview promised? 'Course, I was a little worried that the giant foot looked like it stepped out of "Jurassic Park," but I shook those worries off. Too bad they were realized.

The first image I saw of the design was in USA Today, which made a pretty big to-do about it. I tried real hard to like the movie. I even defended it a little. I didn't look at the monster as the "real" or the "brand new and better" Godzilla at all, and still found the movie to be pretty fun. Nowhere near as fun as Independence Day was, which was a dissapointing fact all in itself.

I was 13 when it came out and for about a year that was all I could think about. By my second viewing I realized that the movie was insanely boring. The main characters seemed to only think about their crappy love life instead of minor carnage that was happening outside. Godzilla not having a heat ray didn't score high points either.

Oh what could have been.............
