Just throwing in my two cents -- don't kill me!
Based on the first episode alone, I wasn't really impressed. But, I am hopeful it picks up in later episodes.
Half the episode was just the monster battle, which quite honestly began to drag after a while. There are large chunks of the episode where nothing happens to progress the story. I also felt like I was watching a Bandai commercial at times (although, I suppose that's not unexpected, considering the whole show is based on a video game.)
To me, what made shows like STAR TREK great wasn't that they had bright colors and looked like they were made in the 60s, it was that they had compelling writing, which IMHO, this episode sincerely lacked. Creating a retro-environment and brining back the "forgotten" kaiju is fun, but that isn't all that goes into making a good show, for me at least.
On the plus side, the actors seem well suited to the roles, the suits looked fantastic, the soundtrack seems pretty good, and the sets aboard the ship are very cool.
I look forward to next week. Lots of great shows had bad episodes, so I hope I'll enjoy the next one more. If not, there are plenty of other shows to enjoy, which is the beauty of the genre. Something for everyone, right?
