Just got back from seeing it...
The whole time I was thinking, "Man, this would be so much better if Godzilla was in it."
**SPOILERS**
The monster design was the biggest let-down for me. It just looks like a skinny Orga. Totally uninspired design. I don't understand how an American-produced movie like this, with a marketing campaign based entirely on not showing the monster, especially after Zilla '98, after countless monster movies, that was the best design they could come up with?
The monster's roar, its movement, its entire execution is wholly underwhelming. The more they showed of it, the more I wished it was Godzilla. This monster is completely forgettable.
And what's with the little scratch-and-you-blow-up monsters that just fall off of it? Are they supposed to be its offspring or what? If you've seen any recent zombie movie, any ALIEN movie, or seen the movie THE DESCENT then you've already seen what happens when these things attack.
To that end, if you've seen the beginning of Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS, or the first attack in Zilla '98, then you've seen the giant monster scenes in this film, except done worse than those.
**END SPOILERS**
The other aspects of the movie are competent enough, but at times the entire documentary-style works against it.
While the dialog in general is sufficient, it becomes so painfully obvious its a PG-13 movie when no one is swearing like mad as they theoretically would be in such situations.
There are too many moments where you have literally no idea what your looking at, or the camera will continually look away from what you want to see. This makes for an at times frustrating viewing experience.
What I really want to know was what kind of video camera they used. It has an amazing battery-life, and takes great quality film, even though it's bashed around and dropped repeatedly.
Now somebody needs to make a film similar to this, with a more grim feel to it, and with Godzilla fighting another monster and give us some actual money shots that are worth the price of admission.
