Ok....we've been getting people complain that this movie is a reference to 9/11....and this is what I have to say to them... ----
DUH!!!
Cloverfield is SUPPOSED to be enticing, traumatic and troublesome. This ain't no Ben Affleck movie. It is meant to bring back 9/11 memories and remind us of that palpable fear. It is supposed to remind us that we take our liberties for granted too much, that they can be smashed by fear and tossed around by monsters.
Yeah so you look twice at the guy sitting next to you on the bus. Good. Don't you see that this is supposed to be what we do? Look out for our world and one another?
So sorry Cloverfield makes you uncomfortable. (No I'm not.) Cloverfield is an allegory and a lesson. It is the Godzilla for the United States.
This very well may be JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves most important work of their careers. I can tell by your open letter Meredith that you are very superficial, that you go on and on about Jennifer Garner and Violet Affleck, Jennifer Lopez and shallow TV shows. But you get a sniff of something with substance and a true purpose and you hyperventilate. How DARE JJ Abrams make a film that reminds us of 9/11?!
If we don't learn from the past we are doomed to relive it. Shocked
As a country the United States truly needs to go deep, and examine 9/11 and our own souls, we need to confront our fears and make something from them. We can't just afford to move on and forget about it, to skim life on the surface.
This is going to be an important film for precisely the reasons you deride it.
