Just got back. Loved it. It really was mostly an awesome tribute to the best parts of the Alien & Predator films. Early word on how mean spirited & dark it was were correct. Nobody was safe, and that's just the way I wanted it. It really is everything the first AVP should have been.

I'd go further in depth, but it's time for Christmas dinner. I hope everyone has a happy Christmas. Late.

**SPOILER-FREE REVIEW**

This movie was so bad it was entertaining. Not so bad it was good; it came off feeling like a fan-made film with a larger than normal TV movie budget.

There's almost nothing original, which works both for and against the film. Practically every kill in the movie is a throwback to a previous Alien or Predator movie death.

The studio and directors first touted this movie has "hardcore", and while it is, I'd say it's definitely not in the sense of what they meant (which was a swearing, surly gore-fest). The movie could've easily been edited down to a PG-13. The directors took advantage of the R rating, but only in the sense of making the film feel more true to the original films. Capturing the look and feel of the original films is something the first AVP never did, and this one basically emulates the originals in certain moments. That's fine, but would have really been too much of a financial stretch to do something fresh? As it is, it suffices.

When I heard the setting of this film, I knew it was a bad sign. The setting is what doomed this movie to begin with from achieving any notoriety. Aliens and Predators running amok in a small town... Anyone could tell you that just sounds silly, and it is. This was obviously done for budgetary reasons and the films suffers heavily from it.

The characters of course are a joke and you don't care whether they live or die. Like all average monster movies or slasher films, they exist simply to be slaughtered. The movie is too short, has too many forgettable characters, and the dialog is too atrocious to allow us to give a toss about anything that has to do with them.

The creatures overall look great, save for a few random shots of Aliens ducking behind cover and looking very unnatural while doing so. The Predator looks fantastic in all respects and behaves much like you expect it would. It's great to see it returned to its former glory. My only complaint is the PredVision is overused, and at times makes it unclear as to what's happening. this movie gives us what AVP1 didn't: Aliens fighting Predators, frequently. Of course, this isn't enough to carry a movie, but will satisfy most.

Anyone who has a notion of what this movie's about and is expecting this film to be on the level of the past films is just kidding themselves. Should we expect more? Of course, but unfortunately we're not getting that, and probably never will again. As a fan-made throw-back film to previous greatness it barely passes, as a worthy successor in this once coveted franchise, it's an abomination that's here for our money.

- Anzildrah

Note: If I had to give it a rating, I'd say 2.5/5. Movies should be entertaining and this most certainly is.

AVP-R was a dissapointment. Though I didn't hate it to the extremes as MouthForWar, I was severely agitated that the concept of two uber-aliens duking it out was messed up twice. The ONLY exciting bit in the ENTIRETY of the movie was the opening logos, which were cool as hell. The last four minutes was extremely weak, the 'cliffhanger' dumb, and the resolution of the small town with Alien infestation unsatisfying. And seriously, guys, these "actors" cannot act to save their lives. Not even Reiko, who kicked arse in 24 (Season 2-5). The majority of the movie was the Aliens and Predator walking around, looking menacing in a nifty little pose. An marginal improvement over Anderson's effort, AVP-R still is nowhere near satisfying.

I think basicly this is what happens when you milk something dry. ALien and Pred are some of my fave movies, but after awhile theres only so much you can do. They need to let it die and go back to fanboy fodder comics if anything. A
