The Vinyl Figure Awards round 41: GODZILLA 1989/91

Postby Legion » Sun Oct 07, 2007 5:03 pm

Well we're half way through with this year's series of Vinyl Figure Awards. I'm not sure how I plan to continue this after these next two rounds with my orthodontic surgery falling on the 19th but I know I'll figure something out. So no worries.

Godzilla gets the spotlight again in this round featuring the most popular of the Hesei Godzilla designs, with the 1989 Godzilla suit from Godzilla vs Biollante, which was resued in 1991 for Godzilla vs King Ghidora. Bandai had a stranglehold on Heisei Godzilla merchandise for almost a decade before other companies were allowed to pick up the license. Regardless, there haven't been too many figures of this popular Godzilla suit but this round includes a nice sampling.

Lets meet the nominees...

Image
First up is Bandai's own 1991 Godzilla, released alongside Godzilla vs King Ghidora in 1991. To this day it remains one of the most popular 8" Bandai toys among collectors.

Image
Also from Bandai is their 14" version of the 1991 Godzilla, also released to coincide with Godzilla vs King Ghidora. Does bigger mean better?

Image
Once they were allowed to produce figures of the Heisei Godzilla characters M-1 was very quick to produce this 1989 Godzilla in 1999, alongside a final stage Biollante. Both were initially sold through the Toho Fan Club, though both toys were later reissued in other colors. The M-1 Biollante didn't make it to first place, but maybe this Godzilla will.

Image
What would you get if you crossed Godzilla with a chipmunk? Well, you'd probably end up with something like this figure, released in 2001 by a company called Toy Pirates. Pity it.

Image
And of course Marmit also joined the party in 2004 when they added this 1989 Godzilla to their Monster Heaven series.

My vote goes to the Bandai 14". Just an impressive toy, all around(even if the end of the tail is a little fat).

Yeah I'm going to have to go with the 14" Bandai toy. It's an awesome figure, and I'm sure I wont be the last person to say that.

EDIT: Cute. Who voted for the Toy Pirates figure? :o

The Godzilla 14 inch one is pretty spectacular...I like the open mouth better than the closed mouth of the 8 inch (though I love that figure as well).

You know what's funny is that the 14inch Bandai 91 G is pretty easy to find over here for only 8000 yen (a little under $80)....yet the horrid stump Bandai Biollante still goes for $150. Go figure....

The Bandai 14" Godzilla 91 was reissued in large amounts, that's why it's easy to find.

There's so many more votes than people explaining why.

The Large Scale Godzilla, issued in 1991 and reissued once in 1996, is a great toy, but the 8" version is a classic!

Come on!

...Come on!!
