The Vinyl Figure Awards round 32: GODZILLA - VINTAGE STYLE

Postby Legion » Sun Sep 02, 2007 9:57 pm

While I've previously grouped Godzilla rounds based on specific monster suits (G '54, G '62, etc...) it's definitely worth pointing out that several of the oldest Godzilla toys were stylized in such a way that it's impossible to tell which Godzilla suit they're supposed to be. They certainly deserve a round all their own, as many of them are classics in their own right and deserve the spotlight. In my mind they're all winners, but who will you vote for?

Image
Our first entry is the very first Godzilla vinyl figure ever produced. It's the Marusan Godzilla, released way back in 1966. The original is on the left, followed by the 1970 Bullmark issue and then the 1992 Bandai re-release.

Image
We've all seen this guy go tumbling down Ken Yano's slide. It's the giant Bullmark Godzilla, released in 1970.

Image
Moving on to Popy we have what collectors have dubbed the "attacking" Godzilla, released in 1978. The mold for this figure was reused when Mattel released their "Godzilla's Gang" series.

Image
Next we come to Popy's 1979 "Kingsaurus" line. This is the medium size Godzilla from that particular line. Sadly I do not own the large green Godzilla from that line so it will not appear in this poll. Sigh...some day.

Last it's Popy's giant Kingsaurus Godzilla figure. This figure was later turned into both a bank and lamp by Beetland.

I love the Popy figures. Absolutely adore them. But I have to give this to the Marusan. It was the first, and I'm proud to have it in my collection. A classic.

And remember guys. Don't just vote. DISCUSS.

Sorry, even though these are vintage designs I really don't care for these figures.

The original Marusan Godzilla deserves a lot of respect for what it represents, and if we were looking at only Marusan and Bullmark here, I'd certainly have to go with it. But you decided to throw in Popy too... and I adore their medium Godzilla. It and the giant Kingsaurus capture Godzilla's look better that I think the attacking sculpt does, but I still give the nod to the medium sculpt.

Eventually, I'd like to get ahold of one of them as well as the Popy Gigan.

even though i think the popys look pretty cool, i went with the bullmark giant godzilla. If i'm ever able to get a vintage figure, that would be my first priority. I just think he's swell. While i recognize the significance of the original marusan, i've never liked that sculpt.

Kind of disappointing. No discussion since Monday and I see quite a few familiar names are missing. This is ending Saturday so if you haven voted please do.

I do appreciate the designs of the vintage stuff, some more them others of course, not just because they are old and rare and all that. They all have character in their different ways. Yes, indeed these are all winners. If I had to choose though, I would do so based on each toys character. Does it excite me the minute I lay my eyes on it. They all do of course due to their nature. The one that does this the most is the Popy Attacking Godzilla. It grabs me and says play with me. I own the Mattel release of this figure.
