I think the range/diversity of the stories and direction is what makes MAX such a fun show. In that sense, it's very much like the original ULTRAMAN. My favourite example has always been Takashi Miike's two episodes back-to-back -- two *very* different takes on the same basic character and set up. If you dislike one week's episode, there is a chance you may still like the next.
The other of the Heisei Ultraman series have tended to maintain a standard style or formula throughout their run, which can be great if done right, but boring as hell if you happen to dislike the route they're taking that particular year.
