In 1993's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, G-Force and Mechagodzilla were originally intended as radically different than how they ended up on screen. G-Force was originally going to be a Super Sentai-style team created by the UNGCC to combat Godzilla, and the initial fight scene was not between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, but between Godzilla and G-Force (similar to the fight between Ebirah and the Mutants in Godzilla: Final Wars, but with much more physical fighting).
Mechagodzilla was, naturally, the combined form of G-Force's five mecha. Mechagodzilla was intended to temporarily defeat Godzilla, not with the G-Crusher, but with a saber called the Sword of 'Zilla. Rodan's sacrifice was originally going to not just supercharge Godzilla, but also grant him pterodactyl-styled body armor, including electric grappling cables from his wrists (these were later reworked into Mechagodzilla's G-Crusher).
Unfortunately, Toho remembered that Toei had just done Dragon Caesar and Zyuranger, and so they just dumped the whole Sentai idea. Toho has never forgiven Toei, which is why they refused to make Godzilla vs. Super Sentai when Toei suggested it in 2003.
