Attack of the Super Monsters to DVD

Attack of the Super Monsters, originally released in 1982, is actually a badly English dubbed movie compilation of the first four episodes of a low budget Japanese TV show from 1977 called "Dinosaur Wars Aizenborg" that was produced by Tsuburaya, the folks responsible for "Ultraman". This was not one of their prouder productions.

Anyone ever see it? It's absolutely insane. And it's coming to DVD on June 5th.

It wasn't "low budget" because visual effects shows are generally more expensive to produce than regular television shows (discounting LAND OF THE LOST, of course). By today's standards it may be perceived as "low tech," but so is the original STAR TREK. I wouldn't speak for Tsuburaya Productions saying that its "not one of their prouder productions" -- that's being a bit presumptuous, don't you think? :D

I even wonder if this is licensed?

and the effects are way better than the theatrical LEGEND OF DINOSAURS, that's for sure.

i love plesiosaurs, but this movie is, while not the worst MOVIE in the world, it remains an interesting failure overall. the effects are laughable. why on Earth would they choose two "dinosaurs" (neither of which is) that are not even able to move about on the ground? i'm still at a loss as to how anyone can think this is any kind of well made monster movie. it's better than gino, though, how's that? i AM afraid of it- more people might think it's deserves classic status and say even DUMBER things about it! plus, if you get eaten by either reptile on land, then you deserve death. i mean, a rhamphoryncus is the size of a small bird!

Aizenborg is way cooler. Koseidon beats them all!

Wow, it's Monster Dog!!!! I remember seeing this movie on VHS years ago, my brother had rented it from a video store. I had completey forgotten about this movie. All I recall from it was a section that played out like a music video.

The TWE version of ATTACK OF THE SUPER MONSTERS was all over the place in the early 1980s -- you couldn't go into a video rental shop anywhere without seeing on the shelves (along with RETURN ON THE DINOSAURS and other TWE releases, mainly Kung Fu flicks). I eventually purchased these from Tower Video when we were disposing of old inventory -- we even had a number of Japanese pre-records of Godzilla, Ultraman, and other tokusatsu-related stuff (remember, Tower Records was a major importer, and I got a lot of original Japanese LPs from them, including the original ten-volume Akira Ifukube series from King Records).

Anyhow, you don't see any of these TWE's floating around anymore today -- in fact, I believe I gave my copies to a friend in Japan as a present (so I no longer have mine, or even copies of them), but I still have some of the Japanese pre-records, including a Beta Ultraman Series Music Video -- all of the series from ULTRA Q through ULTRAMAN 80! Tower Records used to be a seriously cool place back in the '80s (it became too corporate in the '90s). Now, it's gone...
