Timing is everything. Not just calendar dates, but also currents in cultural tastes and interests. The second push for GRINDHOUSE has just started, I saw a new trailer for GRINDHOUSE during a commercial break for Jimmy Kimmel tonight, so let's see what happens this weekend.
I went with a bunch of friends to see the film again tonight, all of them are prime candidates to like GRINDHOUSE (they have the proper sensibilities), and everyone was blown away and surprised that it was tanking. Those of our group who were the most vocal during DEATH PROOF were the girls, who LOVED every gawd-danged minute! They laughed with the dialogue, got caught up with the first set of victims, and were very audiably shocked by their demise -- once again, they were caught up with the second set of characters, laughed at the dialogue, and were vocal during Zoe's stunt and the ensuing car chase.
Once the girls declare their revenge they were hooting; during the entire tables-are-turned final chase, they were giggling like all get-out, and going "Yeah... YEAH!" They laughed hysterically at crying stalker, and were jumping in their seats when the girls kicked his ass -- and the final blow was met with CHEERS! They really got off on DEATH PROOF (just like I thought that they would). The consensus after the film? Everyone LOVED the entire package -- with special mention going to the trailer for THANKSGIVING.
One of the comments was, "That was the best three hours I've ever spent at the movies." Oh, the theater we went to was the historic single-screen Bridge Theater which originally opened in the 1920s, which was three-quarters full -- and that's taking into consideration that GRINDHOUSE is playing on four or five screens in San Francisco (which is only 7x7 miles). We'll see what happens.
Hopefully, it doesn't drop down too far this weekend, and gets a little boost in ticket sales. The new advertising campaign is the "Review" version, "Two Thumbs Up!", etc. (Plus, I want to see it one more time before it leaves first run.)
