VHS Appreciation Thread...

Postby MouthForWar » Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:22 pm

Am I the only one that doesn't have a problem with VHS? If I see a movie for cheap on VHS (for example, the video store here has TONS of used VHS tapes for $3 a pop), I have no problem picking them up. Of course the lack of widescreen picture on a lot of them is a problem, but if its a film that isn't super important to me, I'll go for it.

I've been a film junkie all my life, so I still have a ton of movies on VHS and replacing them with DVDs has been a slow, painful process that I'll probably never be able to finish. But whenever I go and watch one of those tapes, I always think "you know, this ain't so bad." Hell, some of my VHS tapes look better than some DVDs I own!

All in all, it seems nobody likes or cares about VHS anymore. Am I the only one left that doesn't mind getting/watching VHS tapes?

I love DVDs, but I haven't gotten rid of any of my VHS. In fact, I collect them, the last one I recall buying was the Canadian "Sea Monster" release just last summer at G-Fest. I don't really watch them, but I enjoy my collection. Also whenever I have to record TV programs I still use VHS tapes.

I've replaced most of my VHS tapes with DVD or at least transferred them to DVD-R, but I still have many stored away (years of recordings, commercial tapes, and bootleg tapes). There are a lot of movies on VHS that aren't on DVD yet (and may never be), so it's worth keeping until all movies have been put out on the better medium.

I still have several VHS tapes - I find them very handy when I don't want to bother with turning off/stopping the DVD player late at night.

You'd think that with all the money spent designing DVD players [and now "HD" media players IE HD-DVD and Blu-Ray] that someone would have thought to put a sleep timer in them so they can shut themselves off...

I buy vhs tapes all the time. Two days ago I receieved another Australian vhs of GODZILLA 1985 along with the Greek vhs to the film under the videobox title "Γκοτζίλα 1985", but it was just the lame international version.

I usually go around to all of the mom-and-pop videostores in Texas and buy what vhs they are liquidating. Monday I made off with BLASTFIGHTER, MARK OF THE SCORPION, WHAT WAITS BELOW, HELL'S HEROES, AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK, ACTS OF VIOLENCE, IRON WARRIOR, THE DIRTY SEVEN, INVIATION TO HELL, EQUALIZER 2000, HELLTRAIN, ANOTHER SON OF SAM, and METAMORPHOSIS: THE ALIEN FACTOR. All for under $20! I only think one on that list has made it to R1 dvd so far.

Some videostores are like time capsules to the 1980s, that place was selling a brand new, shrink-wrapped RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK betamax tape for $20.

Hate to rain on everyone's parade, but I love upgrading a VHS copy with a new DVD and either:
A) taking the VHS to the library
or
B) depositing it in the TRASH...!

I'm sorry, I don't mourn the death of VHS at all.

You know, I've had this weirdo daydream that if I ever became a film director I'd try to make one movie that would be made to look like an old VHS recorded off TV. With low-res slp look, commercials, maybe a cartoon in the begining.

Wouldn't that be neat?
:D

I'll be getting a DVD recorder soon. There's stuff like Cartoon Planet that will probably never be offially released due to all the Ultraseven clips and They Might Be Giants music. I have plenty of other stuff I've taped too.

This might be a silly question since they were made by pretty cheap companies, but the '97-'98 US VHS releases of Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, and Godzilla 1985 are not copyright protected are they?

Too bad my all time favorite Godzilla VHS, HBO's Godzilla vs. Biollante, has that damn macrovision.
