Before Sony even shoots a single frame of film, they'd have to re-acquire the rights from Toho to produce it as the previous rights expired long ago.

Back around 2000, then-L.A. General Manager Masaharu Ina told me that if Sony ever makes another Godzilla movie, it would not be related to the first one except as Star Trek II was related to Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Since the first one was such a critical dud (and not just by fans), Sony would have to start another one from scratch. We shall see.
