Gran Sazers' popularity or lack thereof has nothing to do with how succesful a Godzilla show would or wouldn't be. It's apples and oranges.
I think,at least in the U.S.,an adult anime about Godzilla would be HUGE. By "adult",I don't mean like porno or ultra violence,I just mean something that doesn't talk down to it's audience.
What most people dislike about Godzilla are the below-Hollywood standard special effects. Obviously,with anime that isn't an issue. If the Godzilla anime was on a quality level near Evangelion,or at least similar to it in tone,it would definately gain a small following at first,then once people tell their friends,"Yeah it's Godzilla,but it isn't corny,it's awesome!" the audience would grow and grow.

I remember reading that soewhere, I don't think it was on Henshin, but I think someone like August or Ed Godzi said it.. But anyways.

I'd rather see someone new, do something that would relate to present events perhaps and keep the scifi aspect of it alive, no supneratural stuff..well not too much.

Toho could make a list of what worked and what didnt worked, analuze them and use it to improve the next generation of movies.

and for a Godzilla anime, sadly, many animes are just a bunch of clones, few are even funny and are just "Doujinshis/hentai bait" for the otakus, or emo trash. I dont have problems with cute girls, but If Im going to see a Godzilla anime is for the kaijus, the fights, a good AND fun, entretaining story, and some hints of other works here and there doesnt bother me.
