Opens with Mirai discussing the origins of Ultraman Mebius with footage from the TV series (being given the brace from the Father of Ultra, etc.) Then theres lots of footage from the new movie!

I kind of wish Hikari/Tsurugi were in the film, though.

I'm back! Saw it today, and loved it. I haven't seen such an action-packed Ultraman film in a loooong time! Very entertaining. The story is nothing special (the Yapool angle is nice, though!), but it's more than enough to support all the very cool Ultra-action packed into the film. I suppose the obvious reason I and a lot of Ultra-fans my age (I'm 42) love and will love this film is of course the nostalgia of seeing the Ultra Brothers together again, going up against a bevy of familiar but updated monsters from the past (nothing really new about that angle, but still very cool).

No plot spoilers here, but I can say that the effects were for the most part very well done, with the CG fluctuating between sheer brilliance and PS2, and the miniature work was as good as any seen in the Ultra universe. The Ultra suits were all beautifully executed (just about brought a tear to my eye!), as were the monsters. I never thought I'd be able to say Temperor Seijin looks cool, but now I can! Guts Seijin was my fave in this film. I even gave in and liked the ol' lump-jawed Ultraman A-Type suit!

Finally, it goes without saying that it was more than great to see Hayata, Moroboshi, Gou, and Hokuto on the big screen...these are the guys I grew up with and to me are the definitions of what Ultra is all about.

As Tsuburaya Pro obviously intended with this film, it should appeal to all fans of the Ultra phenomenon, from Ultra-geezers like me to young fans who only know Mebius. This was reflected in the theater today, where I saw a mix of middle-aged men with and without their youngsters. Judging from the crowd reaction, I'd say a good time was had by all. Today was opening day, but the theater was only about 2/3 full.

Final verdict: Ultraman Mebius and the Ultraman Brothers is a heartfelt and very well-executed tribute to the series; a highly entertaining and very fitting tribute to 40 years of Ultra!

Thanks for the review by the way, Moonlight! I must ask; is this another one of those films where they whole colour timer issue is just conveniently "forgotten"?

HMV have samples of all the tracks on the soundtrack CD on their website, which was released today. A good amount of it is recycled from the TV series - not that it's a bad thing, of course, since MEBIUS has one of the best soundtracks of all the recent shows. While I really love Tak Matsumoto's "rock 'n roll" tunes for THE NEXT, I feel this is perhaps the best soundtrack of all the recent movies:

Oh, yes! Listen to track 10! It's the great battle theme that was strangely omitted from the TV series soundtrack! I'm glad it's in the movie. Hoping to catch the film on Sat 30th. Unless I can find SINKING OF JAPAN still running somewhere, in which case I'll see that first while there's still time, and see MEBIUS later.

The film opened at #3 over the weekend. For consideration:

- It's currently the best ranking domestic Japanese film in the box office.
- The films in first and second place are big-budget Hollywood pictures (X-MEN, FF3)
- GAMERA THE BRAVE opened at #6
- GXMG, SOS and GFW all opened at #3

They had a special screening in Ikebukuro today, with an introduction by director/SPFX director Kazuya Konaka and CREW GUYS... oh, and Ultraman. My camera isn't the greatest, so the images are very grainy, but I assumed you'd enjoy some snaps...

The rest of my day sucked ass, so this was the only highlight.

There was a new opening for the TV series this week as well. Ultraman, Ultra Seven, Ultraman Zoffy, Ultraman "Jack", Ultraman Ace, Ultraman Taro, Ultraman Leo, Astra, Ultraman 80 and Ultraman Hikari all appear in the opening titles now:
