Virus is great and all, and its awesome to finally have the uncut Japanese version, it really REALLY shouldn't be in a "Sonny Chiba Action Pack"- Not only is Chiba in it for like 3 seconds, but its not an action movie at all. Its a dark, dreary, depressing apocalyptic story.

But yeah, I plan on picking this up for the uncut version of Virus alone.

In answer to your question, MouthForWar, "Virus" is excellent: both the transfer and the film itself. I was a little leary of throwing on a two and a half hour movie when I was feeling dozy, but it held my attention the entire time. The story and visual effects were really good. It was worth buying the set just for that film alone, although I've yet to watch the other two. I'm not sure how it compares to the public domain edited full-screen version, as I've never seen it that way, but the movie is definitely best for widescreen.

I like how they included the movie on a Sonny Chiba Action Pack, considering it's not a Sonny Chiba action movie, or even a Sonny Chiba movie aside from his brief appearance. You can tell it was just a gimmick to get people to buy a set of three movies thinking it was going to be like the Street Fighter or something. However, I was not disappointed at all, considering I wouldn't have even checked out this film otherwise.

Is there a dub that exists where all the characters speak Japanese? I'd imagine this film was like "Final Wars" in that the English speaking characters had their dialog filmed in English, and left intact for the version released to international markets.
