I think on the last page someone said that I didn't care about the US version. Just to clarify; I really like the US version of Godzilla vs. The Thing. It's a great Americanization. I have no qualms with getting the film slightly cropped if it means a better picture, missing scenes intact, and without those sound problems. The only real bummer is the frontier missle sequence, and that's just a big smoke-screen over Godzilla so you're really not missing much visually there.
The only film that I know I'll prefer the US version to the Japanese is Monster Zero (Nick's own voice and a great dubb in which they dicided to skip the phoney accents)... and I already have the Simitar DVD so;
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
...but seriously. This conspiracy that CM's gonna use the HDTV transfers for the US releases on all the DVDs has no factual credence and is pure speculation. Ed stated that they had both prints, evaluated which one was better, and eventually decided the 16x9 print was the better bet.
Unless it turns out that ALL the cinemascope US G prints have something wrong with them, then I don't think we'll have this problem again, and if, by some grand coincidence, that comes to pass, then so be it. I'd rather have the cinemascope Japanese prints and the best possible version of the US prints then have these releases delayed another two years!!!!
