Reasons to buy the Ultraman region 1 set

Postby orsonzilla » Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:11 am

So the source is dubious and the quality not as primo as the region 2 release; I'm still happy with my purchase and look forward to Volume two.

I've been collecting Videos since the dawn of the eighties. Getting a viewable copy of Ultraman has been a pain in the ass. It didn't help that broadcast rights lapsed so it wasn't worth anyone's while to broadcast the series.

The only "legal" release was a single volume on VHS with a hefty price tag for only 4 episodes. The prospect of having to fork out that amount another 9 times was pretty discouraging.

So tracking down bootlegs became the only way I could include my favorite series in my video collection.

So now comes the "moral dilemma" of grey area surrounding BCI's release.

I have no problems here, if only for the fact I've had no problem with the previous bootlegs and crappy VCDs I hade purchased before. Here's why:

1- Contrarily to bootlegs, the sales figures for the DVD are tracked and monitored. This might prove to be the best "market research" ever for Ultraman in the West. If a large quantity are sold, it'll demonstrate a market. It'll also show that the previous lack of success may have been due to prohibitive pricing.

Best of all, it may eliminate a lot of the second guessing that's been going on when marketing Ultraman in the West for past couple of decades: "Let's aim it at teens! Add some hip-hop and funny dialogues!" or "Package the series in a box only adults can afford with a t-shirt only a kid can wear!"

2-It's folly to sue for no money. Tsuburaya needs to have something tangible to go after (to at least cover legal fees). So proceeds from the sale of this set might encourage Tsuburaya to take legal action to put this issue behind them once and for all.

So any Ultra fan struggling over wether he should purchase this set can rest assured that, in an indirect way, they are still doing the red and silver guy a favor.

Has anybody noticed in episode 16 when they are in planet R , hayata transforms inside the jet beetle right in front of the captain and in episode 17 he transforms in front of fuji and the little kid. Isnt hayata to suppose to keep it a secret from anybody knowing that he's ultraman ? Even though he transforms in front of the cap and fuji they never mention anything about hayata being ultraman like if nothing happened ?
