GORGO comparison and question

Postby GFan » Mon Jun 26, 2006 8:32 am

Does anyone here have an open-matte transfer of GORGO? I believe AMC may have shown one back in the day. I'd also like to know if the Video Treasures release (or the other PD tapes) might be uncropped.

Here are some comparisons:

VCI's first DVD:

VCI's second DVD:

A clip from ATTACK OF THE 50FT MONSTERMANIA (shown on AMC):

And the MST3k version:

The VCI transfers are heavily cropped on the top & bottom. However, the first release has more information on the sides. The second transfer has more information on the left side, but LESS on the right side, and even less on the top & bottom!
The AMC clip looks superior, with more detail, and less murky/bleeding colours. And finally, the MST3k version has a tiny bit more information on the top.

I love this movie, and I'd really like to find a decent transfer of it (C'mon Warner Home Video!).

At one time (in the late 90s), AMC showed the film in widescreen, and it looked just right.

So what's the legal mixup again?

Gorgo has always looked fugly on the dvd format, even in widescreen. I have no idea why the second VCI (more like "VCR-recorded crap matted to fake widescreen and put to dvd") dvd is non-anamorphic. For a dvd in 2006, this is frustrating for this user. I just can't imagine myself watching a truly restored and remastered version in anamorphic 1.66:1 with less murkiness.

AMC's "widescreen" version was like 1.44:1 or something very tiny, but nice. i'll see if i can post a screen grab of it sometime in the future, but i taped it then put it on DVDr, so it may not look that great qaulity wise, just a warning.

stupid cropped DVDs!
