Official Gamera 2006 Thread (may contain spoilers)

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Speaking of checking out the dvd, I just finished running through it.

I'm more excited than ever for this film. I was relatively pleased by all the footage I saw, kaiju and non-kaiju. It looks like a pretty heartfelt family film, with some very pleasant looking kaiju action as well.

I am totally shocked that they are not going to show Gamera on the weekend. My g/f can not get the 4th off so we wouldn't be able to stay. I figured it wouldn't be a problem, surely they'd screen the US premiere of the Gamera movie during the weekend. I gotta say, I am devastated!   I don't think we'll be coming down now. No point if I can't see the one movie I really wanted to watch. It does look like a great lineup however.

GAMERA THE BRAVE was literally a last-second addition... I was actually finishing up the film notes for the Egyptian to make the calendar deadline when Kadokawa called me and asked "Do you want the movie?". By that time, Friday, Saturday and Sunday were booked. There will be guest speakers on Saturday so that can't be moved, and Sunday is an "All Tsuburaya Day".

I'm sorry you're not coming down. I've seen GREAT YOKAI WAR and its fantastic, I've heard great things about NEGADON, and Subday is the premiere of MIRROR MAN: REFLEX, the new film from the makers of ULTRAMAN: THE NEXT. Gamera or no, there's some excellent stuff to see that weekend.

You can call it what you want, but that is what Kadokawa told me when I mentioned it. As it was explained to me, it was because it is a digi-beta master that's to be shown, not a 35mm print.

People have the right to be told what is being shown. Remember: truth in advertising! :D

Keith,
Can you please elaborate on the A/V quality one can expect from a digi-beta master presentation?

As for where the "premiere" is... c'mon. Where's it being shown first?

I've seen and used plenty of DigiBeta material in large theatrical venues; there's no reason to be concerned about the quality at all. At that bitrate, there's virtually no issue with artifacting or quality in general. As you indicate, it's entirely dependant on the projection system, and as long as it's over 10k lumens, I can't imagine that the audience would notice any difference at all. I suspect that the Cinematheque, in Hollywood, probably has a pretty good idea of how to best present the material.
