If I was hard on the guy, it's only because it has become frustrating over the years that the first word on a new film always seems to come from someone who is not overly skilled in the craft of film criticism. We wait for months and months for a film to be released and many of us are very anxious to hear how it plays by opening day, positive or negative. Personally, I would like to see a first review written by someone who has some experience writing them and labors to be as objective as possible (as a good critic should) when offering insight to those who are eagerly awaiting the movie.
I acknowledged several times that he is up front about his preferences, and I applaud him for being so. That's more than you can say for many "first reviewers". But there are many people in this fandom who are very gifted in the art of film criticism and have, in the past, been in Japan for the premiere of a big movie. Unfortunately, we don't often get the first review from those guys.
