Terrible review... from someone who CLEARLY didn't expect to like the film going in, and freely admits that he is biased against children, children's films, the Showa Gameras and Gamera in general, and child actors playing major parts in kaiju films. In other words, a review that is COMPLETELY USELESS to anyone looking for a relatively objective and critical analysis of the film on its own merits and shortcomings. It's a shame these guys who have no idea how to write or critically analyze a film always seem to be the first ones to see the movie and offer their opinions. There are individuals with genuine insight into the art of cinema and considerable writing skills in this fandom, but we always get this kind of "insightful" commentary long before we get a real review.

Before anyone jumps on me, I'm not talking about the fact that he didn't like the film. That's his opinion, and he's entitled to it. I'm talking about his overwhelming bias against the film going in (at least he admits it) and his decision to rush to his computer and hack out an error-ridden "first review" without taking any time to carefully consider what he's just seen, structure his thoughts or proof his review for spelling, grammar, etc.

I think if Dan (Hajime) hadn't taken the time to specify his likes/dislikes before-hand, there might have been a problem. I personally thought it really helped put his views into context. Everyone has at least a little bias for one thing over another, and to pretend to ignore it is probably a greater offense. I don't think this was supposed to be a "review" per-se either - he was just sharing his thoughts with his friends at a discussion group.

^Agreed. He makes clear very early on, that he has his own bias'. He doesn't force anyone to read it, hence his opinion of the film is certainly just as valid as anyone elses. I personally appreciate the fact he said outright the things he doesn't like in a Kaiju film. Helped me to put his thoughts into perspective.
