Official Gamera 2006 Thread (may contain spoilers)

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Since some people missed the announcement from earlier in this thread, here is un updated version:

SciFi Japan is a brand-new tokusatsu news website I'm putting together with some very knowledgeable friends. The staff includes Bob Johnson and some of the top people from Henshin! Online and Monster Zero (including Mechascorpio), JAPANESE GIANTS editor Ed Godziszewski, correspondents from Japan, and some writers/reporters that you guys probably haven't heard of yet but who really know Japanese fantasy film and have a lot of info to share.

It will launch March 1 with exclusive US coverage direct from Kadokawa about the new Gamera movie. Kadokawa has provided some great BIG photos and a lot of information (including plot details) from the film. I also have some additional closeup shots of the young Gamera suit and unconscious Gamera prop so there will be images no one has seen before.

A lot of questions and speculation about the new movie will be answered tomorrow!

And that's just the start... there are some great news, reviews, interviews, and behind-the-scenes reports in the works. For example, our second feature for opening day is a tribute to Akira Ifukube that includes a personal message from Shogo Tomiyama, president of Toho Pictures and producer of all the Godzilla films from BIOLLANTE to FINAL WARS.

I second Aaron's statement. A helluva way to kick off the new site Keith and co.!

So, Zedus is the real name of the foe. I like it better than Jidas, not gonna lie. I also like the way the story seems to flow. It's a nice story, that's not overpopulated by confusing twists and turns. It seems like a lot of love and care for the Gamera property is being put into this film, and now more than ever I'm really looking forward to it. =)

VERY good article on the new Gamera movie, Keith. Very informative stuff, and nice images to go along with it.

I like both the international English title Gamera: The Brave, and the fact that Jidas' English name is Zedus. That makes sense that they would translate it in that way. I heard that transliteration of the "J" sound from Japanese to English can be translated as "Z" or "DZ". And since the Japanese "Jidas" would be pronounced "JEE-DUSS", it makes sense that the English translation would be "ZEE-DUSS". I like it, because Zedus just sounds all the more badass. And Zedus himself still looks badass as hell.

I must say, it does sound like this movie is getting more work and dedication put into it than I had originally conceived. It's obvious that the crew and cast are giving it their all. From what we've seen, most of the special effects do look excellent, with highly detailed miniatures and monster suits. Though Toto still looks ridiculous, with his stoned-like eyes and all. My main gripe that I have is that the story does sound somewhat cliche and formulaic. It seems like mildly lazy writing to have Toto appear just in the nick of time to save the cast of characters from Zedus. Also, what's with Zedus sinking boats to scarf up little humans that are much smaller than himself, yet opting to return to the ocean for no reason and pass up on a meal of fresh turtle meat right after he wounds Toto? Also, anyone else notice the subtle similarities to War of the Gargantuas in the plot description? Toto is kept by the boy as an infant, then leaves off on it's own, only to re-appear later in the midst of a conflict as a more grown giant monster; just like Sanda in WotG. And Zedus is a monster that sinks fishing boats at sea and eats people, gradually working his way toward the Japanese mainland in which he attacks the main populace; just like Gaira in WotG.

Overall, Gamera: The Brave is looking like it could be a fun family movie with some good points going for it. It doesn't look like it's going to turn out as bad as any of the sucktacular Rebirth of Mothra movies, but I'm still not expecting it to be anything great by any means. It'll probably be a fun family movie, decent overall. That's looking better than I was originally expecting, so my opinion of this movie is moderately positive now.

Nice job on Sci-Fi Japan. Awesome stuff.

Great article on Gamera The Brave KPA, sounds like the film will be alot of fun to watch.

Right now, I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that someone here in the US works out a NA distribution deal. With Eisner out of the way perhaps the heads at Disney will give Gamera a shot...

Great, great, great (did I mention great?) article on the new film, Keith! SFJ is already a smash hit in my book!

The film itself sounds even better than before. I'm still absorbing all of the details, but it's clear that the filmmakers are taking great care to make certain that they don't dishonor the legacies of both the Showa and Heisei series while still breaking some new ground. From all of their comments and the plot synopsis, this sounds very much like a classic Gamera film centering on a child protagonist but produced in the 90s style, with an emphasis on realism, detail and destruction. Zedus sounds even cooler and deadlier than he looks in the pics, and his weapon is reminiscent of the unique capabilities of many of Gamera's Showa opponent. Hopefully this article will help ease the fears of some fans who haven't liked what they've seen so far. This fan, for one, is stoked for this movie!
