So, perhaps the ever-knowledgeable August can answer another Ultra-Question for me...

I'm currently making do with a DVD-R burned from the Expressions In Animation VHS. The prints of the four episodes on this tape, while watchable, are certainly not very good. If EIA licensed these directly from Tsuburaya, who presumably retain good-quality masters of the show, why did they use what look like substandard old broadcast prints?

Actually, EIA (in an attempt to save money) ripped their masters from the Bandai Laserdisc boxset, and matched them up with the English tracks they had in hand. Apparently, and correct me if I am wrong, they didn't have the English tracks for Episode 4, and so TPC transferred a print of the English version in Japan and sent it, at their own expense, to EIA in Ohio.

Years later, Tsuburaya and Panasonic spent endless hours remastering the video and audio on ULTRAMAN (and other Ultra Series), which are the masters that should be used for future home video releases.
