Despite being an easily enjoyable movie, KING KONG ESCAPES, I think is where the the team of Honda and Tsuburaya started to slip a little bit. While Honda keeps the story moving along comfortably, this isn't his best work. And you can tell that by this time, the strain of juggling his job at Toho with Tsuburaya Productions, and failing health was getting the better of Eiji-san. Still, we have an excellent Ifukube score, great performances by all (with the exception of Linda Miller, sadly) and a nice, light-weight comic book-type story that stays true to what Kong is. He's at once menacing, but still sympathetic, but with a little bit of goofiness thrown in for the kids. And MechaniKong ROCKS!!! One of the best creations ever! Gorosaurus is memorable too.
Oh, and the new DVD is excellent. Just watched it in its entirety for the first time since I got it!
