GKOTM end credits found (sorta)

Postby Baradagi » Wed Nov 30, 2005 9:59 pm

I received the Toho Video release of Godzilla, King of the Monsters (which has some of the nicest video artwork I've ever seen for the film) the other day.

No Transworld logo, but surprisingly, Toho added extensive video-generated credits at the end of the film!

A friend of a friend of mine has a 16mm print of GKOTM that does have original end credits that I think just says, "Starring Raymond Burr Directed by Terry Morse and I. Honda". What is even stranger is my friend has seen 16mm prints with the credits placed at the beginning of the film as well! It would be interesting to see the American version with the Transworld logo, credits, and matted to its intended 1.85:1 ratio one day...

I have another Toho Video VHS of GKOTM:

The film looks identical to what you've posted here, fullscreen with English subtitles and the new end credits. There's also a Japanese version of the US theatrical trailer.

Ed Godziszewski has a very nice 16mm print GKOTM, and Toho gave us permission to screen it at "Godzillafest" in SF last year. I really enjoyed it because it was the first time I'd seen the complete US version since I was a kid. It had the Transworld opening logo and at least three minutes of end credits (I was surprised at how long and detailed they were!). A great bonus was that Ed's print starts with an original TV spot for GKOTM that I had never seen before... it was a treasure trove of Godzilla rarities.

Cool! I haven't seen the TRANSWORLD logo since my off air VHS from the 70's finally died, and I don't recall ever seeing it with end credits! What music plays with them in both Ed G's print and the Toho Video version?

Also, that TV spot with the kid's voiceover sounds fascinating! Can anyone describe it in detail?
