I am convinced there is a social commentary in RODAN. At least, the various problems associated with the coal mining industry must have been well-known during the time RODAN was made, therefore I don't believe that the film touched on this subject by sheer chance.

When I saw RODAN the first time with subtitles (thanks to James Ballard), I was surprised to find out that the Japanese commander is more likeable in the American version when it comes to shelling Mount Aso. In the American version, the military also seems to be more competent, because when they first search for Rodan, the American version utilizes the scene with the helicopter while in the Japanese version the military seems to have nothing but three jeeps at hand.
