“Godzilla is a force. He is not something that can be stopped by human weapons. He is brutal and severe. My Godzilla will be the cruelest and fiercest in the history of the series.â€

Though Godzilla: Final Wars was released in Japan in late 2004 and has since pilfered about the net, I took little action in seeking down an early copy of it. I, being a Southern California resident, felt safe in the knowledge that I would be able to see it at the now-ritualistic summertime Egyptian Theatre G-film blowout. Being a staunch believer of the idea that the best way to see a new Godzilla flick is with an enthusiastic audience, I wanted to wait until then rather than watch a muddy, un-subtitled internet bootleg or try and track down a pirated DVD (knowing Sony will likely soon have a release of their own). Plus, to be honest, I’d heard some rather…unenthusiastic reviews of the work, and perhaps that put it in my mind’s back burner.

Well, my father and I took an excursion to Hollywood today for some enjoyment, with the eventual highlight of attending the GFW screening (gawking at the gee-whizz “e-meterâ€

What a great review, Cy! Kudos for taking so much time and thought on it! Can you tell us a bit more about the screening itself (attendance, reception and such), either here or in the ?

I also saw Final Wars at the Pickwick, and I really enjoyed the film. I've read reviews, so I knew exactly what Final Wars was, and I went into the theater expecting a fast paced film with Matrix fighting, a powerful Godzilla who quickly kills foes, and fast battles. Because I wasn't expecting a "normal" modern Godzilla film I really enjoyed it for what it was.
Sure it wasn't perfect, some of the CGI could have been better (Manda, the Mutant destroying the shield generator), the fast battles and city destruction scenes, and a long part of the movie with a lack of G action.
However, I really felt that it overcame those flaws. It had very fast pacing, the battles were good even if they were short, and I did enjoy the Matrix fighting because I was expecting it. I really loved the opening with scenes from different Toho films.
It wasn't the best G film ever, but it wasn't the worst film. I really enjoyed it, which is important to me. However, I do hope that future G Films go back to the traditional style, or go with a new style. I don't want all future G films to be like this one.

The auditorium at the Pickwick does not seat 4,000. I am told that it seats 1,400. I tend to think its capacity is more like 1,200 as the theater was nearly full and the figure was around 1,100.

As for the Godzilla 2000 trailer, it was shown as a treat. But it is my personal copy and I had not screened it before to see what kind of condition it was in. In a way you can say that the crowd was there to see the last film of the Millennium Series and the trailer was a reminder of how the Millennium Series started. Would you have preferred to see a trailer for the new Love Bug movie instead?

Here is my simple, short review...

Seeing this for the first time in the theater at G-Fest was incredible. This movie is the Godzilla movie I've wanted to see since I was a kid and it delivered. The X-Men and Matrix similarities aren't NEARLY as much as people make it out to be, and although I could have done without them, they didn't bother me at all. It was GREAT to see a movie like this that is a throwback to the Showa series and brings back the goofy charm of those films. Not to mention, it was NON STOP action and neat special effects. The action was great and I'm glad they put more action into this one, like the old movies like GTTM had. Just tons of action. That's why I liked Tokyo SOS so much, it focused a lot on the monsters and had some great action sequences. Taking it up a notch in SOS made it a great predecessor to Final Wars. In my opininon, Final Wars is the best Godzilla movie since AT LEAST Godzilla vs. Destroyah.
