Kong also knocked himself out not once but twice.
Godzilla moves out of the way. Kong rolls and knocks himself silly on rocks.

TWICE!

Yet another reason why Kong was just lame in this film.

The material stating Kong's victory came out in 62 when the movie did, in programs and such. My guess is the only reason Toho has since changed it to a "tie" is because they are sick of all the people whining about it, so they are just trying to make everyone happy.... which still isn't working. Kong was intended to win, he won, end of story. Hard to change your mind about the end of a film after its been out for years.

I agree that Kong is supposed to be the winner.
I just don't understand how you guys can say he physically beats him underwater in two seconds when he's the underdog through the whole movie.
I don't understand why you guys can't grasp the concept of having an open ending to the movie so that Godzilla is available to return. By having him get trapped underwater.

Lets look at another twist to the same type of ending:
In the ending to Monster Zero. Godzilla,Rodan, and KG all tumble into the lake. After some bubbles and such. KG emerges and flies into space.
Godzilla and Rodan are never seen again....The end.
THE SAME ENDING AS KK vs. Godzilla
Please show me a statement from Toho that says KG won.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Toho says KG lost and ran away.

There you have it. The same ending with two different interpretations.
The only difference is Toho's marketing statments.
These endings are intentionally vague. Toho knew what they were doing.

It's implied that Ghidrah lost in the movie, though.
"Did he kill Rodan and Godzilla?"
"Nah, he couldn't. They're too tough!"

Kong was like sort of like Gamera - he loses the first fight or two, but then wins in the last round.
