Ah, 'Godzilla vs. Megalon'...despite being considered one of the poorest entries in the G series, it sure gets alot of attention - and a fair bit of it tends to be positive! I gotta say I love this flick, altough that wasn't the case when I first saw it. Now I didn't loathe it the way some fans do, but I was somewhat disappointed with the flick - the cool Ifukube music was gone, Godzilla didn't seem as mean as before, and that kid's voice got on my nerves somethin' fierce. Gigan, Megalon and Jet Jaguar were damn cool though, if a little outlandish. Still, it was fun to watch.
But then I saw Ultraman, and my opinion of 'Megalon' and the other '70s flicks changed considerably. Now I saw what influenced G's heroic side. After watching Ultraman, then Kamen Rider, Giant Robo, Spectreman and many others I grew to love the '70s G films, since they were so similar to those cool shows.
Now I can't get enough of Superhero shows and giant robot cartoons - and I can't get enough of Godzilla. (and Gamera too)
Personally, I like all of Godzilla's character traits - from vengeful destroyer, force of nature, loving parent to noble defender of Japan. It's all good.
G's heroic nature is just one aspect of his character, making him a multifaceted monster, and not some one-dimensional city-stomping killing machine.
It's just as well G has so many cool elements, since there's sometihng for everyone in there. Wouldn't it be dull if G were portrayed the same way in all the films? I'd think so.
